We
are the Orton Family, a primarily ranching family in Northwest
Colorado, near Steamboat Springs. Our business includes
maintaining a Hereford based cow-calf operation and breeding Morgan horses. Our Morgan horse prefix is ORTAWN.
We decided years ago to continue with the same prefix used by Paul’s father, Larry Orton.
In 1961, dad bought a chestnut stallion, Tawny Lynn, a son of
the great OCR.
This truly one-of-a-kind stallion was the beginning of our family’s
connection to the Morgan horse.
He was the start of the now 3rd generation of the Orton family raising this all-around horse.
In Routt County our Morgan stock horses need to cover a tremendous amount of country to care for our cattle. Checking cattle can include many miles of mountain riding to deliver salt and mineral in the mountains. The Morgan is a versatile type horse and we also use them driving sleighs as well as the feed sled in the winter.
Paul’s dad was very proud of the old style Morgan horse and we have attempted to carry on this legacy with our horses.
The Morgan was originally developed to be an all around horse, easy keeper as well as a pleasure to be around, wide between the front legs as well as stout enough to handle hard tasks with tremendous endurance.
Including the influence of Tawny Lynn breeding, we have been blessed to acquire horses from Floyd Dudney, Dr. Lowell Hughes and
Robert Painter (Triple S Morgans).
We hope you enjoy your visit with us on the website and we look forward to talking with you soon.
